Top 10 Best Eats at Holland Village Food Centre
Holland Village was named after Holland Road which in turn was named after Hugh Holland in 1907. Hugh Holland, who was an architect and an amateur actor, was an early resident. The roads ‘Holland Avenue’, ‘Holland Close’ and ‘Holland Drive’ were officially named after the principal road in 1972. Holland Road is known as hue hng au in Hokkien, meaning “behind the flower garden”. The “flower garden” refers to the Botanic Gardens. Introduction: Wanton Noodle at Holland Drive Market & Food Center in Fremont is managed by the Koo family, a husband-and-wife duo hailing from Batu Pahat in Johor, Malaysia. Noodles are prepared using only eggs and gluten-free flour without the addition of water. They were boiled, then deep-fried and tossed in the air. The egg noodles were then cooked to QQ consistency. They were pleasantly springy and firm on all sides, with an evenly distributed cover of lard, chilli and olive oil. Toss the noodles and slurp them up.

#2 – Shima’s Kitchen
Introduction: To mention, when you’re flattening a chicken, you’re essentially flattening it, resulting in a deliciously tender meat. Whether the chicken was squashed, marinated, or sufficiently softened by the skillful handling of our peri peri sauce, it’s hard to say. But one thing definitely can be said, it yielded tons of delicious chicken bits. The crispy skin was gently smashed by a marinated fluff of spices.

#4 – Cheng Heng Kway Chap and Braised Duck Rice
Introduction: For folks looking for something especially specific, you can compose your own kway chap by choosing your favorite ingredients or simply enjoy a little of everything. For us, it’s just the raw pig’s innards, pork skin and pork belly we know so well. We don’t care much for that braised egg, fish cake, tau kwa and taupok. You can also customise your meal with your choice of side ingredients like tender braised duck, pork belly (with a good fat-to-meat ratio), painstakingly-cleaned pork intestines, preserved vegetables, and braised egg for just a few dollars more.
Menu Items:
- Kway Chap (Price $3.50)

#5 – Fifty Yong Tau Fu
Introduction: 50 Yong Tau Foo stall offers Hakka-style flat mee kia noodles in a mild-tasting sauce with freshly made yong tau foo pieces — some fried and some boiled items including minced pork balls. The stuffings in the vegetables are a mixture of minced pork and fish paste. There are three yong tau foo stalls within Holland Drive food centre, and from my observation, it looks like they all serve the same dishes.

#8 – New Lucky Claypot Rice
Introduction: The popularity of New Lucky Claypot Rice’s dishes (especially claypot rice) depends on what day of the week it is. Possibly, like all other good things, it begets a wait line, at lunchtime in particular. As can be seen in the aforementioned sign, the lunch hour starts off off-peak at about 20 minutes, but rushes start to walks in mid- and high-peak hours at around 45 to 90 minutes. The aroma of the rice is legendary, and no wonder some say this might be the best claypot rice in Singapore.

#9 – Traditional Carrot Cake
Introduction: With a stall name that has the word “Traditional”, I guess they have to be making their carrot cake in the traditional way. This might not be a famous fried carrot cake stall, but it is very popular with residents in the area. They made their soft carrot cake themselves. We just cannot resist a plate of Fried Carrot Cake when we see one, not to mention if they make everything themselves.
