Introduction: Opened since 1979, the stall used to be located in Bukit Merah and Clementi, but has since moved to its current location in Holland Drive. (For tourists, Holland Drive is kind of near Holland Village, perhaps a 5 minutes car-ride, 15 minutes walk away.)

The Singapore Michelin Bib Gourmand has gotten more inclusive, with the entrant of a traditional style Claypot Rice stall.


The signature Claypot Wu Wei Rice came after a 15 to 20 minutes wait as the rice is glazed in a claypot at high heat to perfection. It comes in options for two pax ($10/$15), three pax ($15/$20) and four pax ($20/$25).

Cooked over charcoal, the rice has a delectable smoky flavour. You can also find crispy charred bits of rice stuck to the pot — the most flavourful bits, in my opinion.

2. Lian He Ben Ji Claypot

Introduction: “Lian He Ben Ji Claypot Rice” has been handed from father to daughter-in-law Mdm Lim when the stall moved from the streets into a hawker stall. Mdm Lim have worked at hawker stalls since she was 12 at a wanton mee stall. At 16 years old, she helped her then boyfriend’s father at “Lian He Ben Ji Claypot Rice”. Hawker life is in her blood. Now, she managed the stall together with her sisters and cousin – all women power team!

Offerings: Their most popular dish, the Mixed Rice (S$10), contains the ingredients of all the other claypot rice renditions. From lup cheong to salted fish, this dish has everything.

3. Geylang Claypot Rice

Introduction: Founded by Mr Ng Kim Hock (better known as ‘Ah Tiam’) over 30 years ago, their famous claypot rice originated from a humble street stall in Chinatown before finding its home on the most colourful street in Singapore – Geylang.

Their signature dish is slow-cooked to order over charcoal to infuse the wonderful flavours of chicken, Chinese sausages, waxed meat and salted fish into our carefully selected premium rice. Their ‘Tze Char’ dishes are masterfully prepared by their team of chefs, who have cooked at Geylang Claypot Rice for decades.

Offerings: The high point is the house specialty Claypot Rice ($15 for 2 pax, $26 for 4 pax, $36 for 6 pax), cooked in a claypot over charcoals. 4. Yuan Yuan Claypot Rice

Introduction: The owner, Mr Seah, runs this stall with his wife and an assistant. He makes his claypot rice by seasoning the meat in a special sauce of sesame oil, pepper, peanut oil, salt, sugar and ginger for more than 5 hours.

Offerings: They’re popular for using hua diao wine in their Famous Claypot Rice (S$10/S$15/S$20/S$25). This enhances the aroma and taste of the dish, making it all the more irresistible.

Cooking their claypot rice over a charcoal fire also gives it a prominent smoky taste. The smokiness forms a perfect pairing with the umami flavours of the chicken and lup cheong.

Introduction: After learning the trade for six years from none other than that famous claypot rice stall in Geylang Lorong 33, Pan Nip Chang started his own claypot rice business (Yew Chuan Claypot) some 10 years ago and employs the same twice cooking method that his previous workplace uses to make the claypot rice nice and roasted..

Offerings: Their Claypot Chicken Rice 沙煲鸡饭 (S$6/S$12/S$18/S$24/S$30) comes in many different sizes, ranging from portions for one up to a large group. Every claypot comes with unbelievably tender pieces of chicken, which they flavour with their secret-recipe marinade.

Introduction: He Ping Restaurant serves a wide range of delicious Chinese cuisine and is known for their delicious Claypot Rice.


The Claypot Rice is prepared the traditional way with charcoal, so be prepared to wait 30 minutes or more if you did not reserve before hand.

There is something different about the way it was served. The ingredients of chicken chunks, Chinese sausage, salted fish and salted duck egg yolk were removed before the dark sauce and oil were poured in. Auntie helped with the entire process, rather than some stalls which are DIY.

Introduction: Tai Liok Claypot Chicken Rice serves Singaporean and Chinese cuisine. They are known for their Claypot Chicken Rice.

The stall used to be located at Level 2 of Margaret Drive Food Centre, and has moved to Alexandra Village Food Centre.

Offerings: It sells the fragrant dish of Claypot Chicken Rice (price depends on portion size) that comes with a generous portion of lup cheong and boneless chicken meat.

The price is at $12 for 2 pax, $18 for 3, $23 for 4, and $28 for 5.

The rice is fragrant and considered to wetter than the typical which is on the drier side; topped with generous portions of chunky yet soft chicken meat.

Introduction: Jade Palace Seafood Restaurant (JPSR) established since 1998 is a 150-seater eatery with 6 private dining rooms. At JPSR, they serve traditional Cantonese cuisine, focusing in using only exceptionally fresh ingredients for all their dishes. Do drop by and indulge in a wide selection of live seafood, dim sum, roast cuts, and their famous traditional claypot rice.

What sets them apart from others: the wine. They pay as much attention to the quality of our food as to wine makers do when making each bottle of wine. JPSR believes strongly in serving good wines with our food and we are happy to say that their wine cellar stocks a fine collection of wine with over 3,000 bottles (between 150 to 200 labels) from the world over.

15. Zhao Ji Claypot Rice

Introduction: In operation since the late 1980s, Zhao Ji Clay Pot Rice is the second outlet opened by the “sifu” (master) who first operated at the famous Lian He Ben Ji Claypot Rice, also located within Chinatown Complex.

Even though it is not as famous as Lian He Ben Ji, Zhao Ji does a claypot rice which is arguably one of the top in Singapore. But here’s the twist: they don’t even use charcoal to achieve that smoky aroma and flavour. Everything is gas-powered here.

Offerings: The claypot rice ($10/12/15/20/25/28) has the usual assortment of ingredients — lup cheong (Chinese sausage), marinated chicken, cai xin (Choy sum), salted fish and waxed pork — but noticeably missing is the yun chong (liver sausage) which would make for a good addition.
