Lor Mee 卤面, Hokkien-based’s sticky street food with thick flat yellow noodles may not be everyone’s favorite dish.

4. Wang Wang Crispy Curry Puff

Introduction:

Just when I thought I had tried all the must-see stalls on Old Airport Road, I found another one! When I said that this might be the flaky curry I have eaten, I didn’t exaggerate it. The position is run by the husband and wife, they produce batch after batch of shortcrust pastry.

They have been doing it for seventeen years. But before that, this guy used to be a chef in a big hotel! Their skillful and dexterous way of doubling the puffs is a testament to their years of experience. Both of them make filling and double puffs look easy. I’ve tried making dumplings at home before, and I know that bending something like this requires some serious skills. If not folded correctly, the filling will explode during frying, causing a mess. Coupled with the speed at which they did this, I was totally mesmerized!

During the time chatted with them, they had probably completed two full trays. Their day usually starts around 7 in the morning, where they make everything from the dough to the fillings. These are not made in advance, but are made every day, right in the store. Most importantly, puffs are constantly being prepared and fried in small batches to ensure its freshness.

6. Toa Payoh Rojak

Introduction:

Toa Payoh Rojak has implemented a system that can get a queue number to place an order, this is how they are known to be doing serious things. They used to be located in the center of the HDB floors, they moved in and opened a store in the Old Airport Road Food Center.

The sauce is sweet and creamy, with a strong shrimp paste flavor. One interesting thing they add to their redks is … spinach. I had never eaten spinach and my rojak before, and was skeptical about it, but after trying it it took away all my fears, because it works well together.

Spinach helps balance the strength of the sauce and provides an overall refreshing and sweet experience.

7. Lao Fu Zi Fried Kway Teow

Introduction:

Char Kway Teow is fried noodles, a type of local street vendors. As I grow older, I appreciate it more and more.

One dish, with different tastes and styles.

You will never get the same type of fried kway teow between locations. And since most owners (usually older uncles) fry them plate by plate, even if you return to the same location, you may not even feel the “same taste”. Sometimes it depends on the mood of the uncle (or aunt). That is what gives it personality.

The list is, of course, questionable, but it is undeniable that the queues have been gradually lengthening in recent months. Named as a tongue-in-cheek reference to the famous comic character from Hong Kong, Lau Fu Zi is a Char Kway Teow stall owned and run by Mdm Kuah for more than 3 decades Up to now, you may see a pair of “Lau Fu Zi” or Old Master Q figurines placed at the entrance of her stall, a holiday souvenir from her friend.

Mdm Kuah learned to fry kway teow from his teacher, who once owned a stall on Old Airport Road. In the end, he set up his booth.

8. Famous Old Airport Road Oyster Omelette 驰名旧机场炒蚝煎

Introduction:

Having a degree in marketing does not make me less susceptible to marketing skills, and I am always attracted to street vendor stalls with so-called old-school logos/designs, especially those with the word “famous” .

When I saw the sentence “Buy genuine, say no to copy”, I couldn’t help it! This must be shit, if you give this famous old airport fried oyster vendor a chance, that’s okay. That’s it. From its appearance, I can roughly estimate the texture that should strike a good balance between crunchy and sticky.

Conclusion: Deep frying is inconsistent with the crisp part and the very soft and sticky part. However, it has a high concentration of eggs, which I like very much because I don’t like oysters. The subtle oyster flavor and distinctive aroma are still necessary for the special charm of fried oysters. Fortunately, this dish is rich in “oyster” essence.

Offerings:

  • Fried Oyster Omelette (S$4/S$6/S$8)
  • Fried Prawn Omelette (S$4/S$6/S$8)
  • Fried Cuttlefish Omelette (S$4/S$6/S$8)

10. Albert Street Prawn Noodles 亞峇街大蝦麵

Introduction:

Old Airport Road Market & Food Center has two famous prawn noodle stands: Albert Street Prawn Noodle, which dates back to 1963, and the Whitley Road Big Prawn Noodle that we just reviewed. Sadly, the only Albert Street branch on Lavender Food Court has closed its shutters, and recently the food center has also closed.

A bowl of soup is dark red in color, it does not have a strong taste, it is almost artificially sweet. Compared to the other shrimp we’ve tried, the flavor of the shrimp here isn’t that obvious, for example. Beach Road Prawn Noodles, Blanco Court Prawn Noodles, and Jalan Sultan Prawn Noodles, to name a few. In general, we found that the broth is better than Whitley Road Prawn Noodles a few stalls away, but it also lacks the surprise effect of seafood flavor.

The prawn meat is sweet and elastic, the ribs are fat but not greasy, but the bite is very tender. Mee comes with curry powder, put on a spoon to increase the flavor, you can add it to soup or noodles to enhance the flavor.

The texture of the noodles is good, but the seasoning sauce is a huge disappointment, we have reservations about the mild taste of the Whitley Road Prawn Noodles, but Albert Street seems to have suffered the same fate, if not worse. Although there were fried shallots and extra chili powder, all these efforts proved to be in vain. Finally, this is a simple and frustrating shrimp dish.

Overall, compared to Whitley Road Prawn Noodles, Albert Street Prawn Noodles offers more generous prawn noodles and more delicious soup, although we still wouldn’t call it impressive.

Offerings:

  • Prawn Noodle (S$5.50/regular, S$8.50/large)
  • Pork Ribs Noodles ($5)
  • Big Prawn Noodle (S$10/S$15/S$20)

11. Rong Yi Local Handmade Pau 榮意本地手工包點

Introduction:

Hidden in a corner of the street vendor center, Rong Yi Local Handmade Pau (榮意本地手工包點)’s local hand-made buns serve hand-made dim sum. They have five branches all over the island, mainly in Bedok.

As expected, the chicken was juicy and juicy. Not only that, but it also has an umami flavor that balances out the subtle sweetness of the bun skin. In Pau, there is also a hard-boiled egg, which for me is an essential ingredient in all of Pau.

Offerings:

  • Da Pau(S$1.60)
  • Coffee Pau (S$0.80)

12. Hua Ji XO Fish Head Bee Hoon 华记XO鱼头米粉

Introduction:

Walking through the rows of stalls, I was drawn to Hua Ji XO Fish Head Bee Hoon 华记XO鱼头米粉, all because it attracted so many queues.

Its bright yellow sign is not hard to miss. I also noticed that everyone in line had the same dish on their trays: a bowl full of fish head noodle soup.

Portion is large, and the Beehive Fish Head Soup (S $ 6) is about the length of a ruler. The milky white soup almost overflowed from the bowl and tower of fried fish. A delicious lunch or dinner awaits you.

Flashfried to crisp brown, slightly crispy, with just the right texture. I managed to dig out a meaty steak, and I am glad to see its elasticity.
